Walnut Canyon National Monument

Walnut Canyon is located just east of Flagstaff.

Originally this canyon had a river flowing through it.  It was diverted by a dam upstream.

A beautiful location for a home!

On an "island" or sorts in the canyon, ancient people built cliff dwellings part way up the side of the island.

You can sort of see some of these dwellings near the top of this photo.

Again, it's a mystery why they chose to build in such an inaccessible location.  Maybe just for the sheer beauty of the location?

Here's a view of the canyon side.

There are more cliff dwellings just barely visible about halfway up.

Here is a close-up of one of the cliff dwellings.

These ones are not very high, just barely the height of a person.
