L'Anse aux Meadows

L'Anse aux Meadows is the site of the earliest known European settlement in North America. Ruins have been dated back to 1000 AD.

Several sod houses have been recreated here. They have all been built in an authentic manner.

This photo shows the outside of the main, largest, one.

Inside the main sod house.

Detail of the wall construction. Also visible is a drop-down cover for a roof vent.

The countryside surrounding the reconstructed village.

Uh oh! This Viking doesn't look very pleased at having his home invaded by a bunch of tourists.
(That's actually Walter, in case you hadn't guessed)   :)

Old style wooden boat.

We saw our first iceberg nearby.
